June 2020 Fine Arts Office Updates
Alysia’s Corner
This month be on the lookout for amazing collaborations from the network of Fine Arts Supervisors of Maryland local school systems.
First, check out Arts Together from the network of Supervisors for arts educators. As a guiding document for the continuity of Fine Arts education in Maryland public schools, this document can be used to support local decision making that is in the best interest of students and maintains high-quality Fine Arts programs.
Each week through July 14, M:BRACE will shift to highlight local arts and education leaders by discipline. Presenting their ideas and questions as they plan for the 2020-21 season, the panelists will help the arts education sector to reimagine/repurpose/reinvigorate their pandemic response for the upcoming season.

Virtual Choir Reunion Performance
This month, I was lucky to reunite in a virtual performance with singers from N-Full Effect, the community gospel choir I sang with as a teen. Many of the members are now Maryland Educators, including the Officer of the Department of Creative and Performing Arts for Prince George’s County Public Schools’ Lee Gibbs. Enjoy the performance! Collaborating on M:BRACE creative work assignments
Following TAMA’s expertly led, Finding Joy in Uncertain Times, I reached out to my family to create a multigenerational piece exploring how we find joy and each other while living in different bubbles.
Here are the final visuals and artist statements below. Check out the online exhibition with more creative works from participants. Online Exhibition
Artist Statements:
“I love you Nana, so much” by Kimberley L., Age 6
I wanted to show winter and summertime when the coronavirus is over. The fireworks are for summer. The trophy is for me and Nanna because we are happy to see each other.
Untitled by Stacey C.
I find my way to joy during these precarious times with a little help from my device and the internet! Connecting in this way with my amazing daughter and fabulous granddaughter guarantees laughter, smiles, and pure joy! Stacey C.
The New Patriots by Alysia Lee
It is confusing to live through COVID-19 as a new Kindergartener. Kimmie just started school this year with so much excitement and kicked off excelling in reading and math. And now she can’t do so many of her favorite things, like roller skate with her friends or play on the playground or see plays with her Nana and her Aunt. And Kimmie takes on this challenge boldly, she has found new ways to find joy at home with her parents and little brother. Somehow she gets it that staying home keeps people safe and so off she goes protecting America with another round of bathtub pirates.

Mark Bradford is one of my favorite artists. I’m always amazed by the range of materials he uses in his work and his approaches to transform these everyday materials into fine art.
A few weeks ago, a friend gifted me the book Mark Bradford Merchant Posters. I’ve only just started reading it, but am looking forward to learning more about Mark Bradford’s art practice.
