Saki Bowman Social Media TakeOver

Saki is a multi-disciplinary artist and decolonized storyteller originally from Philadelphia PA.

With an artistic lens colored by the motivation to restore an indigenous world view, Saki’s films amplify the importance of harmonizing generational trauma and living from an authentic place. In her digital work, Saki curates afro futuristic worlds that welcomes the audience to tune into their senses and take note of what’s happening on their internal landscape.

Whatever the form, all of her art is born from curiosity. From communing with trees and breathing from her feet (while connected to the Earth), to creating sacred adornment for extra sensory people – her curiosity often guides her to harmonize ancient and futuristic perspectives.

Q & A with Saki Bowman

When did you realize you were an artist?

  • I first began viewing myself as an artist in 5th grade. At that time I wanted to be an author and a chef. Years later, I’m constantly discovering more spaces within the spectrum of my artistry. During this time I developed these varying pockets of my craft that I thought were unrelated, from film or energy work, to fiction writing and digital art; the past two years have been me marrying these functions and realizing that it’s all one ecosystem. Seeing myself as an artist has been the most ironic journey.

  1. Why does arts education matter to you?

  • Arts education matters because the more the youth are exposed to varying styles and representations, the more they can imagine. The ability to dream and create is what leads to planetary innovation and evolution. We need arts education because we need the future and every now-moment to be woven with truth. Art is how we communicate at a layer that words can’t quite grasp. It’s the subtle activations that we’re engaging with.

  1. As a leader in the Arts, what are your priorities for the coming year?

  • This upcoming year I’m prioritizing refining my craft as an artist, youth mentor, and staying connected to nature.

  1. How does creativity show up in your day?

  • These are great questions. We’re never grown, yet always growing and I believe that creativity is part of the cycle of growth. Creating the reality I desire begins with how I start my day; I like to take time to meditate and practice Qi Gong during the early hours, drink warm tea and journal. In this space, I set my intentions for how I want my day to flow energetically.

  1. Share a recommendation of a book, artist, event, or piece of work that inspires you!

  • I recommend Energetic Boundaries by Cyndi Dale and the work of Andy Goldsworthy
