VALUING BIPOC TEACHING ARTISTS IN THE LEARNING COMMUNITY

Through discussion and small groups, we will begin to develop an action plan for school stakeholders to repair, recreate and reimagine their relationship with BIPOC teaching artists. It’s time to recognize and value the diverse Teaching Artists embedded in the neighborhoods and communities surrounding schools and learning communities.

ANTI-RACISM IN THE VISUAL ARTS CLASSROOM: DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

In this session participants will be responding creatively to the article What Anti-Racism Really Means for Educators by Jamilah Pitts through a lens of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We will be collage making using digital and tangible art tools.

STRIVING FOR HUMANITY: LEARNING AND TEACHING IN THE CARCERAL SYSTEM

Carien Quiroga will share her journey as a Teaching Artist facilitating visual art workshops at several youth and adult correctional facilities throughout the state of Maryland. She will reflect on her teaching practice in the carceral system through an anti-racist lens, focusing on the transformative power of artmaking and re-imagining possibilities.

THE ABAR ART ROOM

This session will focus on what Anti-Bias, Anti-Racist curriculum and instruction looks like in practice. We will look at examples of PreK-12 art lessons and teaching strategies to utilize in the classroom. Through collaborative conversation we will examine how we can move from reflection to transformation of our teaching.

REIMAGINING AN ANTI-RACIST ART MAKING CLASSROOM IN SUPPORT OF GENDER DIVERSITY AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION

What does it look like for art educators and leaders in the field to be anti-racist and trans-inclusive within the classroom beyond rhetoric of well-crafted statements? Inform and educate yourself with teaching strategies, key terms, and concepts found within an abolitionist teaching classroom that also fosters a school climate in support of the learning and healthy development of LGBTQIA+ students. As white educators, we must take risks and utilize our privileges strategically in order to build an anti-racist and inclusive coalition within our schools.

DID I REALLY JUST SAY THAT? BREAKING DOWN OUR MICROAGGRESSIONS

Spend the session recognizing, reflecting, and rewriting how we communicate with one another. Participants will spend this time analyzing personal micro-aggressive language and actions, reflecting on these experiences, and using theatrical playwriting techniques to change the dialogue. Leave the session with insight and strategies to break down microaggressive language.

GRADES 3-6 DRAMATIC MOVES: EXPANDING THE DEFINITION OF ARTS INTEGRATION THROUGH DRAMA AND DANCE

Through dance and drama, participants will consider and explore an expanded definition of Arts Integration inspired by the writings of Paulo Freire, author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Gloria Ladson-Billings, author of The Dream-Keepers.
This definition focuses on a strength-based approach to teaching that validates and celebrates student voice and creativity.

SOCIAL JUSTICE IN MUSIC EDUCATION: A UNIVERSAL ISSUE

This session approaches social justice in music education as a universal issue, exploring the relationships between power, privilege, and oppression in the field. We will unpack current or long-standing policies and practices that present equity and justice issues, and highlight emerging practices and pedagogies that support liberation, equality, and justice in K-16 music education.

AN EVEN MORE SECRET GARDEN: A DISCUSSION FOR CONSCIOUS CASTING IN HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE PROGRAMS

In the wake of Black Lives Matter and the continuing fight for racial justice and civil rights, how do we as educators navigate the perils of casting that avoid the insensitive and disrespectful practices of whitewashing and black/brown/red/yellow-facing characters in our high school musical theatre productions?

FREE TO BE ME; EMPOWERING ARTISTIC VOICE & CHOICE

This workshop focuses on creating courageous spaces through the professional learning framework specifically on building student voice and agency and setting norms. We take an Abolitionist approach to setting norms, through the Anti-Racist framework, leading to student empowerment and the ability to discuss societal issues with students of all ages.
