Anti-Racist Educators of the Arts Learning Lab

Join the 2020-21 Cohort

Application Deadline: October 15, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.

The cohort of twenty-four (24) educators will convene bi-monthly to address racial inequities in arts education by:

  • learning and reconciling history and the root causes of educational and art world disparities,

  • working collaboratively to address procedures, policies, and practices that lack cultural competency,

  • developing teaching and learning resources for the field, and

  • developing facilitation skills for brave dialogue about race with students and stakeholders.

Upon successful completion, a stipend and MSDE CPD credit are available (2-3 credit options) for participants. Successful completion includes:

  • attendance at all scheduled sessions from January through June,

  • private group workshop with Dr. Bettina Love at the AEMS Arts Education Symposium on Anti-Racism and Abolitionist Teaching, and

  • independent creative assignments.


Apply to be an A-REALL Facilitator!

AEMS and MSDE seek a paid artist facilitator to walk a cohort of arts educators through an anti-racist journey.

Facilitators must be experts in (1) of the following topics:

  • Inclusive Procedures and Policy

  • Generative/Anti-Oppressive Facilitation

  • Coalition Building

Artist facilitators would develop an asynchronous session for participants which would result in a creative/artistic project based on the topics above. Artist facilitators can be up to a team of two per topic.

Artist Facilitators would be responsible for 6 hours of contracted work which includes:

  • 3 hours planning time

  • 3 hours of asynchronous recording for participants


Apply to be a Content Facilitator!

AEMS and MSDE is seeking a content facilitator to walk a cohort of arts educators through an anti-racist journey. Facilitators must be experts in (1) of the following topics:

  • Inclusive Procedures and Policy, Art Making

  • Generative/Anti-Oppressive Facilitation

  • Coalition Building; Art Making: Vision Statement

Content facilitators would develop live sessions for participants in which they talk about anti-racism topics listed above. Content facilitators can be up to a team of two experts per topic. Content Facilitators would be responsible for 12 hours of contracted work which includes:

  • Two 2-hour interactive live sessions with participants

  • 1 - 1.5 hours drop in group coaching session

  • Planning Time
