When Students Teach: Creating Solo Performances from Transformative Moments in the Classroom

Has a student or classroom moment ever really stuck with you? Dare I say, changed your life? What do you do with them? In this masterclass series, actor, dramaturg, and playwright Leayne Dempsey walks you through a process of transforming meaningful classroom experiences into powerful solo performances. You’ll learn how to shape your story, develop your narrative, and bring it to life on stage.  The series also includes tickets to two professional solo performances.

Participants will engage in:

  • Writing workshops to develop their solo scripts based on their classroom experiences

  • Performance coaching, focusing on voice, movement, and narrative delivery

  • Collaborative feedback sessions with peers and guest artists

The goal is to equip teachers with the skills to craft and perform their own solo pieces, transforming their day-to-day teaching into a narrative art form that can be shared with broader audiences.

Description: This training will provide an introduction to trauma-informed practices as they relate specifically to arts educators. The training will begin with a foundation in stress, trauma, and its potential impact on individuals. The course will explore how stress and trauma connect to some key areas of brain theory that demonstrate when the brain is - and isn't - primed to learn, and what they can do as facilitators to help students engage, retain, and apply learning. The course will connect the five basic needs often impacted by trauma to how an art form can both challenge and grow these areas for students. Finally, we will consider how social dynamics (present in both in person and remote learning) can trigger fight-flight-freeze response, and what participants can do in curriculum structures and facilitation practices to account for these dynamics and create a safe space for all. Time to process, question, and brainstorm using sample tools, reflective free-writes and small group discussion will be threaded throughout the presentation to help arts educators connect these behavioral theories to their arts educator practice.

This course is presented by Stockton Rush Bartol Foundation.
